A Facebook Reel is a short, vertical video, typically between 15 and 90 seconds long, that can include music, filters, text overlays and editing effects, designed to be watched full screen on a phone.
Meta introduced Reels in 2021 as a direct response to the popularity of short form video elsewhere. Unlike a regular video post, Reels get their own dedicated tab in the Facebook app and are pushed heavily by the recommendation algorithm to people who have never followed you, not just to your existing friends and followers. This makes Reels one of the few remaining ways to reach a genuinely new audience organically on Facebook.
| Format | Length | Lifespan | Who typically sees it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reel | Up to 90 seconds | Stays on your profile permanently | Followers and new people via recommendations |
| Story | Up to 60 seconds per clip | Disappears after 24 hours | Mostly existing friends and followers |
| Regular video post | No strict limit | Stays on your profile permanently | Mostly your existing audience, via the main feed |
The most frequent issue is reusing a video that already has a visible watermark from another platform, such as TikTok or Instagram, which Meta’s system can detect and may reduce that Reel’s distribution. Uploading low resolution or heavily compressed clips, ignoring captions entirely, and posting Reels only occasionally instead of consistently are the other habits that most commonly limit how far a Reel actually reaches.
For Pages and creators, Reels are worth treating as a discovery channel rather than a promotional one, since heavily branded or sales focused clips tend to get less reach than content that feels native to the format. Repurposing longer videos into short, punchy clips, testing different hooks in the first frame, and checking the professional dashboard’s Reel insights regularly will show which topics and formats are actually resonating with a wider audience over time.
